Theme: ‘Science Engagement Embracing Research And Innovation In Bridging The Gap Between Science & Society’
• The subject of research has not received adequate attention in previous SAASTEC activities and conferences.
• Although the theme is premised on “Researchâ€, it is inclusive of all science from Marine Life and
Oceanography to Space Science.
• Research can only happen if one is deliberate about it.
• Research and innovation are directly linked. If SCs consider themselves to be pioneers and innovators of
STEM education solutions, then research must be at the core of what they do.
• There is insufficient publication of SC work Locally.
• Action research is critical for SC practitioners to reflect on their work and to improve their practice.
• Research and publication will enhance visibility of SC work.
• Research can be used to attract funding to SCs.
• If we incorporate Research as one of our deliverables in Science Centres, this will have the potential of
attracting other role players into the space.
• Doing research does not take anything away from science centre activities, but rather enriches them.
• There is also a need to put a spotlight on the United Nation’s Year (2024) of the Camelids.
